All registered breeders in WA and other states are all bound by their own individual state's code of ethics.

Canine Association Of Western Australia - Members' Code of Ethics

HM2 CODE:
2.1 I shall ensure, that at all times, all dogs under my control are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and receive proper veterinary attention if and when required.
2.2 I shall not knowingly allow any dogs under my care to roam at large. When the dog is away from home I shall ensure that it is kept on a leash and/or effective control at all times.
2.3 I shall enhance the reputation of dog breeders and dog owners by endeavouring to ensure that my dogs are not a danger or nuisance to my neighbours or to other members of the community.
2.4 I shall breed for the purpose of improving the standard of the breed and not specifically for the "pet market" yet I retain the right of free trading, to advertise directly and sell dogs not kept for line maintenance purposes by me.
2.5 Except in extenuating circumstances or with the approval of Governing Council, prior to the mating, I shall not breed from any bitch causing it to be mated before it is twelve months of age and I shall not breed from any bitch kept by me more than twice in three successive heat seasons unless that bitch has heat seasons of less than one per year. 03/03
2.6 I will not breed, in the life of any bitch causing it to whelp more than six times without prior written veterinary certification of fitness for further breeding being submitted to the Association and with prior approval of the Secretary/Registrar.
It is the responsibility of the current owner to verify the number of litters a bitch may have had prior to their ownership of said bitch. 4/01, 6/02, 3/04
2.7 Unless specific permission is given by Governing Council I shall not permit any of my purebred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a crossbred or to an unregistered dog of the same breed nor shall I breed from an unregistered ANKC recognised breed, unless the dog is registered with a CAWA recognised body.
2.8 I shall, when selling or otherwise transferring any puppy or dog from my care ensure:-
2.8.1 any puppy is at least eight weeks of age.
2.8.2 any puppy exported is at least twelve weeks of age.
2.8.3 any puppy or dog is vaccinated.
2.8.4 the person receiving the puppy or dog fully understands their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal including dietary, immunisation, husbandry and housing requirements, and
2.8.5 the person receiving the puppy or dog appreciates the undesirability of breeding unregistered or crossbred dogs.
2.8.6 I shall not knowingly allow any dog owned by me to be sold or handled by any person, business or organisation that has been proven to be sub-standard in regard to the welfare of any dog in their care, in transit or in the dog's future placement.
2.8.7 I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed nor falsely advertise in any media nor mislead any person in regard to the performance of any dog.
2.8.8 I shall ensure, when selling a dog with a Certificate of Registration or transferring a dog to another person, that documents as required by CAWA Regulations will be provided to the purchaser or transferee.
2.8.9 I shall provide a receipt to the purchaser clearly stating whether the dog was sold with or without a Certificate of Registration and any other conditions. For the purposes of this Code "with or without papers" shall mean the Certificate of Registration.
2.8.10 I shall oppose all activities which involve cruelty to dogs or in which dogs inflict damage to other dogs or other animals excluding the hunting of vermin.
2.8.11 I shall not knowingly sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers or retail pet dealers, nor shall I knowingly permit a dog to be advertised, displayed or sold on commission by a commercial dog wholesaler, retail pet dealer or an auctioneer.
2.8.12 I shall not directly or indirectly allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind.

When you’ve decided on a breeder make sure that you understand fully any conditions and or contracts that maybe attached to your purchase. Similarly where health clearance certificates are advertised, ask to view the originals for both the sire and dam of your new puppy. Don’t forget to ask questions and seek advice from the Committee and others involved with the welfare of our breed.
